The topic that I have chosen is the effectiveness of the
prison system. I am picking this topic
because I think it is very controversial and that it affects everyone in some
way or another. I already have an
opinion about this topic and my opinion is that prison systems are entirely
ineffective for rehabilitating criminals. In choosing this topic I hope to
learn what some of the professionals opinions are about the subject. Also I would like to evaluate the statistics about
recidivism and see how much tax money is used on prisons. The ideal audience is anyone who is affected
by this which includes but is not limited to all taxpayers and families of
inmates.
Derek, this is a manageable and researchable topic, and I appreciate that, because of your job, you have a personal stake in it. Knowing your current position on the topic will help keep your research focused but also presents the danger of conducting one-sided research. Make sure the sources you look at take into account different perspectives so that the conclusions you reach are based on effective, well-informed research. You've identified two possible audiences, and for this project, I encourage you to focus on one or the other. When it comes time to write your editorial proposal, the proposal you make to a taxpayer might be very different than what you'd suggest to families of inmates.
